Importance of Maths at GCSE level

From my career guidance work with young people over the past month I have been encouraging them to ensure that they can attain at least level "B" grade at GCSE.
Although most of the courses available at our two local universities look for GCSE passes in English and Maths at Grade C or above, a number of courses demand GCSE Grade 'B' as a condition for entry. This is particularly important given the recent introduction by UCAS of the five day adjustment period for those who 'met and exceeded' grade expectations.  Here applicants were able to look for alternative courses while still holding their original choice. How disappointing for those students who may have had the grades at A Level with which to negotiate a change only to have failed to be holding a GCSE grade 'B' level Maths required for entry. I refer in particular to courses such as: accountancy, economics, business economic/management, finance, international business (with a foreign language), politics, philosophy & economics, some computing courses (e.g.robotics), quantity surveying, software engineering.    www.ulster.ac.uk  www.qub.ac.uk.
