Rebranding Bournemouth University

In the early 80's when my sixth form students were searching for a higher education course that would address their interest in the burgeoning tourism and leisure industries, many were drawn to the attractions of the Bournemouth course despite its polytechnic status back then.  Today, Bournemouth is a flourishing university on the sunny south coast - a World Heritage coastline. Such beauty is mirrored in its many high quality academic offerings.

Regularly, I would intend to flag up for Careers teachers and students institutions that for different reasons, have made the national press and may well be worth previewing  in your 'Further/Higher Institution of the Week' section on your careers noticeboard.(If you haven't already created a section, perhaps you could think where best to place it) You could begin by posting up key information you gathered from your recent visit to Open days at the two local universities; Queens and University of Ulster.

Within the last four years the current Vice Chancellor of Bournemouth University (BU) has transformed the ethos of the university from one, not just recognised for the quality of its teaching, but to one where staff are totally engaged with their subject and as a consequence greater emphasis has been placed on research.  New areas developed include conservation science and ecology and on the 24th September 2009, a new Executive Business School will open. BU (its new branding) can now boast of being one of the best universities. It was the fourth most improved university in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) winning more than £2.2 million for research.
Within the National Student Survey on student satisfaction level it can again boast a high position. Bournemouth's renewed emphasis on research at the highest level has had a dramatic effect on the number of students applying.
Student attendance at Open Days has spiralled from 1400 to over 6000 last year, with figures expected to rise again this year.  Applications have gone up 13.6% and overseas applications by more than 30%.  The university encourages entrepreneurs of the future.  Three of its present undergraduate students with their own inventions, licensing agreements and patents are bringing in over £200,000 a year to BU, helping to forge those all important links between business and education and bringing lustre to a university that has changed quite dramatically this decade.
