Would you like a career as a media technician?

The Belfast Telegraph's Job Finder section on the week ending 17th October carried an interesting article on a career in the media. The search is on for school leavers keen to pursue a career in the technology side of the media industry. The article was particularly timely given the hosting of the most recent Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) conference at Loughry College just the previous day.

The Film Media technicians New Entrants Scheme - due to start in January 2010 - is seeking ten candidates from across the UK to embark on its first scheme with the aim of training qualified Film Media Technicians.
Entrants from NI are being encouraged to apply for the programme, which offers training in industry, technical and workplace knowledge and skills to the new entrants over a 12-month period.

The course is designed to provide all that is needed to establish a successful careeer in the technical areas of film and television media libraries.

Trainees must be over 18. The programme will deliver two weeks in the classroom in a residential setting where each trainee will learn about the structure of the audio visual industry in the UK; the methods, technologies and preservation issues related to working in the archive sector; developing their skills in identifying and working with audio visual formats; the role of media asset management and future technical development; safe working practice; and developing a personal learning plan to achieve a successful career in the sector.

This is followed by twenty weeks of individual work-based training at the Ulster TV Film Library. Skillset, the media industry sector skills council, and the Film Council have invested over £100,000 in the scheme. The course is designed to attract school leavers to spend nearly one year on the training courses.

Within the Skillset sector, The Head of Stakeholder Relationships for  N. Ireland is Mr.Ian Kennedy (iank@skillset.org)
